A good start is a kettlebell, some dumbbells, foam roller, jump rope, pullup bar and some type of TRX system. A person could do quite a bit with just those basic items.
Cardio equipment of your choice (treadmill, bike, elliptical). I have a treadmill and bike and I alternate between the two. Then you also need weight lifting equipment. I prefer free weights. I have an Olympic barbell set and a power rack with pull up and dip bars. Also have some dumbbells. Then of course you're going to need a bench and some mats. With that, you should have a complete exercise equipment set with which you can do a well rounded routine indoors.
They are a little pricey but if you can find a good deal on a Concept2 rower, buy it. Way more effective than a treadmill, elliptical, stairclimber, etc. some other good things have been mentioned here such as kettle bells, medicine balls, jump ropes, pull up station, etc.
Depending on your goals, I think every basic home gym should have a pull-up bar, yoga mat (for ab exercises), kettle bells, dumbbells, EZ bar, and a bench to perform dumbbell presses and other lifts on.
