The single best exercise is getting off the couch and away from the TV or computer. Anything is better than all that sitting.

I did enough of those in the army usually when we got punished. Effective but I hated them, I still do.

Yes I would agree cross-country skiing works out every part of your body, helps your balance and coordination, and gives you a great aerobic workout. But as you noted, there are seasonal limitations, equipment etc.
