Is an athlete one who is a professional?
Is an athlete one who is a high level amateur?
Low level amateur - fun runs, charity races and such
Is it just someone who participates in a sport here and there? Or someone who trains for performance in a sport?
Is it just someone who goes to the gym a few time a week or runs on a treadmill at home?
Do you consider yourself an athlete?
If someone asked you if you were an athlete, would you feel comfortable saying yes?
I think that most people define an athlete as someone who competes in a particular chosen sport. At least, this is how I define it.
However, ANYONE can be considered ATHLETIC. The 45 year old woman who is in yoga class everyday before she heads over to Soul Cycle for spinning, is athletic. The 20 year old who does Crossfit religiously, trains in martial arts, and runs 5 miles everyday is athletic.
Well, for me at least, that is how I define and athlete and someone who is athletic.
Ive done two Ironman's, countless triathlons, marathons and obstacle races-tough mudder, spartan race, warrior dash. I also enjoy my gym time building muscle.
Ive never really considered myself an athlete, just a guy that loves to challenge himself physically and mentality. Its just FUN!

I would consider you and athlete because you competed in your chosen fields of interest and/or events.
I never refer to myself as an athlete despite my years of karate, kung fu, tai chi, running, crossfitting, weight training, etc. but I am DEFINITELY athletic.
I think it's someone who is competitive in a particular sport
You don't have to be professional or a top player/competitor to be an athlete or athletic
I enjoy half marathons and I'm even planning on becoming a certified personal trainer as well as a certified Pilates instructor but I'm not very competitive so I don't consider myself to be an athlete, although I have athletic tendencies?
I think I would love to become a running coach one day
The ancient Greeks believed that it required a citizenship of sound minds in sound bodies in order for self-government to work. For that reason their concept of athleticism involved a wholistic viewpoint of the athlete.
I still think that's a good definition even though it isn't the norm much anymore.
Seriously, an athlete is anyone who calls hi/herself one, because how are you going to prove otherwise? Personally, I never dubbed myself an athlete even when i was training for a lot of running, tri and other events, because I was never seriously competitive about it and was just out for fun and fitness. So I guess I'd draw the line just above "low level amateur" personally. But like I said, if someone walking their dog around the pond wants to call themselves an athlete in that sport who am I to declare otherwise?
