Drink tons of water. That's what I do when I want to lose weight. I drink water all day long for days on end, and I find that I rapidly lose weight, due to not eating as much. I do this after the holiday season, and I typically will lose about 10 lbs in a week. It's basically a form of fasting. This would be a good way to jumpstart your weight loss plan.
You can work your rear end off in the gym, but it is a lot easier to just consume less calories for weight loss. Make your body burn the excess fat as fuel. You basically have to go low carb to accomplish it in the manner I did. I am definitely not knocking working out, it is important and helps retain muscle mass. Dieting will consume some muscle mass by default, just hold off 2-3 weeks before doing any hardcore exercising until your body adapts to burning fat as fuel instead of carbs.

You'd almost certainly achieve your goal doing Insanity and following that meal plan. You'd get there by about Sept. 15, too.
Keep in mind that the OP is not only trying to lose weight, but also aiming to get into shape for a varsity sport.
Sacredgrooves, you do say that there's nothing wrong with working out, but you still seem to be emphasizing diet with exercise perhaps being kind of secondary. Both diet and exercise need to be highly emphasized for this dual goal of weight loss and sport-specific conditioning.
MmeZeeZee, Insanity or P90X might be fine for weight loss, but it's possible that the OP needs another exercise routine for sport-specific conditioning.
Ogre, yes. I agree. However, it doesn't look like OP is planning to get coaching for varsity try outs (which would be the obvious solution).
Insanity and P90X are both excellent conditioning programs for someone starting from a "relatively fit but not really" baseline. I used Insanity to train to climb a mountain, and I know people who use it as part of their fitness routines for long-distance running. Clearly they have more developed routines, but it's really good for a jump start, particularly if you only have one or two hours per day, and you need structure.
But I agree--ideally OP would get a trainer, and I should have said that in my post. If you can't afford a trainer, and you have 2 hours or less, then Insanity or P90X are two good structured programs that can help you stay on track.
Yes. At your age that is quite an easily achievable goal.
In my early thirties, I went from 247 to 211 in just over two months on a low-carb diet and a steady workout regime emphasizing cardio and mild weight training. It required discipline but it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I only allowed myself 20 grams of carbs a day and would eat as much protein and fat as I wanted. I found I ate a lot less than I did before starting the program and my doctor told me my cholesterol levels were optimal. My daily workout combined 30 minutes of maoderate cardio (elliptical or stair climber) with 30 minutes of weight training, rotating focus to a different major muscle group each day. Do a lot of squats, bench presses and deadlifts and you'll quickly see the results you want.
Eat when your stomach growls. God put that in us for a reason. If you eat too much, your body will tell you by the longer periods of time between stomach growls. If you work out and burn calories, the growl will come faster. Eat as much natural stuff as possible. For eating the animals - the less legs the better.
I lost 20 pounds doing this over a six month period. Won't make headlines - but effective. Won't make the OP's goal either - but just wanted to share.
