My history of shin splints goes back to running track in 8th grade. When I was around 28, I got shin splints so bad that it was impossible to run because the pain was so intense. Someone recommended a podiatrist who made custom orthotic devices for me, and they stopped the problem. I ran with them for years and found that buying the right kind of shoes had the same effect as the orthotic devices. I've run stiedy for the past twenty years and never experienced a severe case of shin splints again. I also never run in worn out shoes and usually rotate at least two pair of shoes. Stretching exercises never helped with my shin splints.

This might be obvious, but like most forms of exercise (weightlifting, etc), running is something you build up gradually.

Starting out, I wouldn't worry too much about the pace. Run at whatever pace you can to complete the mile. From there, I would just continue adding laps - the pace will come naturally.
