Proper stomach crunches instead of situps is one of the easiest ways to build your core without weights.
The core doesn't need direct contraction like a bicep curl. It is a stabilizing muscle that works with the lower back. You're better off running than doing sit-ups, if weights aren't your thing.
There are so many other core moves one can do other than crunches that are more effective. Endless crunches are a waste of time considering what other moves you can do in the same amount of time.
There is not point in doing a lot of sit ups. Once they are easy enough to do over 20 of them in a set it becomes pointless. Sit ups themselves are not the best core/ab move you can do either.

See post above. Instead of situps, do hanging leg raises. I'll bet that even though she could do 1000 situps, she couldn't do 5 hanging leg raises.
I can hardly manage 20 situps before my abs start to burn. I know it is not enough. But how many situps can an average 20 years old girl do?
For the Air Force fitness standards a minimum of 38 situps in one minute to get a passing score - the lowest score without failing.
