I was ready to go and found my guy on one of the machines and two ladies standing nearby eyeballing him. I walked over like I didn't know him and asked them, "Are you waiting on this" gesturing at the machine. They nodded and I said "here, let me help you out" so I grabbed him by the arm... It was sort of funny.

I think women would rather not have to share with a smelly guy (don't forget to wipe your sweat off). They'd rather wait patiently.

You are a "gym squatter".
Squatter not as in "person doing squats" but instead someone sitting (literally) on a piece of equipment, even when you are not actively using it, and not letting anybody else to use it, either.
The women you are referring to would like to use that machine, but are too polite or/and not interested in talking to you.
Change your gym habits.

Only if they are super short short and the top is low, low.

Anyway....back on topic...

As a woman who loves to lift, guys in the weight room can be very dismissive, as if you don 't belong there.

Some will outright ignore you. Others will leer at you - which is just as bad.

So...if the women are not asking to work in, I can see why. It may be just men in general instead of you, OP.

What I believe he means is he is sitting on the machine between sets. If I'm doing leg extensions, I sit and rest between sets. I'm not going to get up and walk around and come back to it just so someone else can use it and then not get up and then I don't get to finish. If anyone asks to work in they can, or I ask if they want to if it seems obvious.

It seems like some of the comments here suggest the OP should get off the equipment between sets so others can just barge in, and then you never know when/if they will get off. In my opinion, while doing your sets, whether 2 or 6, the equipment is "yours" to use, sit, whatever until you're done. Of course, within reasonable time. I.e. not taking 5 minutes and texting between sets.

I've been a regular at probably 15+ gyms over the last 8 years as I move a lot. What I listed above seems to be the pretty general consensus of all of them.

I agree with this.

"permission" - that's hilarious.

Do you come from a culture where women have to ask men permission? That won't go down so well with most of the US women I know.

Personally I prefer not to "work in " with someone. I don't want to deal with changing the weights for every set, then feeling rushed to get through my set so the other person can then reset the weights, do their set... If someone is on a bench or machine I want use, I will work out on another piece of equipment, then return to see if the person has finished so I can get there. I see a lot of folks that do the same. Nobody should be monopolizing any piece of equipment for more than 10 -15 minutes for weight training. My gym has signs (30 minutes aerobics if someone is waiting) and no "excessive time on benches". Most folks respect that.
