I'm 5'10" was able to go from 200 down to 175 in 2 months when I was 30, not 21 when your metabolism is much faster. At 5'10" with a normal build you'll probably look pretty good if you're in the 170s.
I ran and lifted weights 3-4 times a week. It takes a big time investment - I would run at the city lake which had a 10 mile trail - I'd jog with occasional wind sprints for 35-40 minutes probably about ~4 miles, walk for another 20-25 another 1-1.5 miles, then go lift weights which would take 30-40 minutes. Including the transit time from the lake to the gym the whole thing easily took me 2.5 hours, but I saw results pretty quick.
I'd wager at 21 it could go even faster.
I've never been one to really watch what I eat but I never drink sugary sodas and I avoid all french fries (and in general try to avoid fried food). I'll still eat a burger though. I only put skim milk in my coffee and minimal amount of sugar if any. I still eat a pretty good amount of carbs and like to feel satisfied - so that includes foods like rice, pasta, etc... but stick to the healthier options like brown rice and whole wheat pasta although that still gives you the carbs. I probably could have lost more weight if I had cut the carbs, but I hate that hungry feeling.
MyFitnessPal. Track your calories and your exercise.
I'm a female---5'9"ish and dropped from 170 to the 125-129 range just by counting calories. My exercise was walking. Maintained that weight for awhile and then went up to 130-135 because on my frame (medium build) I looked pretty "skeletal" and people were CONSTANTLY on my back about being too thin.
As some others have mentioned here, read nutrition labels. Be aware and conscious of everything you are eating and drinking, and make it into a lifetime change. Be aware of how much sugar is in various products and start minimizing your sugar intake. For example, my sister-in-law was buying cases of Gatorade for her kids who were involved in various sports. She started drinking it because it was in the house and she thought it was healthy. She was gaining weight and didn't realize that 20 oz. bottle of Gatorade had 130 calories, 34 grams of sugar and 270mg of sodium.
Regarding exercise, you must eliminate this idea from your mind that, "I don't want to turned into a ripped guy or bulk up." Exercise is necessary for basic health. You need both cardiovascular exercise and weightlifting. Don't sacrifice one for the other. They will not magically burn all the excess fat off your body but will improve your metabolism, and help prevent diabetes and heart disease.
Hello I need help I want to drop 20 pounds. I think it's a goal that I can accomplish. But I don't know much about nutrition or lifting weights, running etc. I was hoping if I can get some easy to follow common sense guide of exercising and eating well. I don't want to turned into a ripped guy or bulk up I just want to slim down and be more firmer. Please help. I think it will be easier for me to follow something that is not to "hardcore" if you know what I mean. I don't have a lot of money. The weather is not in conditions to be running outside but I do go to a gym that is available that I sometimes use occasionally.
Thanks
When I was 25 I was 235. When I was 30, I was 175. The major difference was that at 25 I had a full time job with an hour commute each way. At thirty I was in grad school, working part time and bicycling 150 miles a week. At that weight and age one finds out just how many lonely 40 year old women there are in NYC.

Yeah I've never been able to stick with a low carb diet. I end up feeling hollow, meat and veggies alone don't satisfy me. I prefer to eat carbs and exercise, thereby having my cake and eating it too.
The thing that buzz bee said about exercise not helping you lose weight is a hillariously awful statement. There are many things other than high impact cardio that's help you lose weight, and there are many things better than high impact cardio to help you lose weight and there are many things other than high impact cardio that will help you keep the weight off.
Actually, it is not hilariously (or hillariously) awful. It is spot on accurate. but, hey:

I need to move to NYC
How were you able to survive in NYC with a part time job
Yeah even in my age I see a lot of lonely 30 to 40 year old women. I bet a fit guy in that age bracket is practically in a gold mine
I can still throw game and attract women. But when I was a muscular 180....it was heaven on earth
The easiest way? Drop your daily calorie intake. Simple as that. No exercise or special diets involved.
Unless you are running 5-10 miles every day, lifting and light cardio won't help a ton as far as fat loss.
