I don't chat at the gym - it ruins my workout. In fact I've worked out with a past significant other and I completely missed my workout I was so distracted. Most people put earbuds in these days and I am one of them... so other than a friendly smile, nod, or brief comment, I stay focused.
Do you talk a lot at the gym? Or do you tend to zone out to your surroundings?
I'm one of those people who can't hold a conversation because I'll completely lose focus. I know people who are just the opposite and get bored to tears if they aren't mingling.
I prefer NO socializing, as I want to just finish and go home. Too much to do at home so I am always anxious to get done. That said, there are a few people that I know in there, that like to chat. I am not rude, so yes I talk a bit, if they come up to me. But I never seek them out.
Since my roommate (workout partner) and I wear altitude training masks when we workout, naturally, people will ask us why we wear it and what are the benefits it provides.
Well, they usually ask him, because I have Male Resting B Face.
I'd rather not be social at the gym, aside from talking to my roommate when necessary and a quick chat to the people that I know that work there. I get annoyed when I see people at the gym socializing like it's happy hour, especially those that will hog a bench/machine.
This is another reason why we go at 7am or earlier. We mostly avoid a lot of the annoying things/people in the gym by going that early.
I hate the music in the gym, so I bring my own and my earbuds cost $100 plus and block out the environment. So conversations are not possible, as I am blasting music while I work out to keep me in the zone. So, no conversations for me in the gym. Like others, I am there to get the job done and GTFO. I also love when the gym is empty so I go at dead times.
I am polite, but, not really sociable. I work out in order to feel better and to maintain health. I don't like working out and I don't want to spend any more time there than is necessary.

No. But I do not turn people away who say hello. I do so myself as regulars know each other. Extended conversation is impossible because you need to focus. Did have women ask me how to do this or that and will take the time to explain. Same with Seniors who initiate comm.
I had my first extended conversation in a while yesterday with a regular who was spotting me while he waited for me to finish. Last about 30 seconds. Dealt with bench press form and techniques.
I HATE (or should I say hated) talking to people at the gym. I used to go at 5 AM every day. You'd think it would be dead at that time but there was a steady group of people who'd be there every day. I was there to workout and get my butt off to work and hated being bogged down by the social butterflies. Some people would even walk right up to me and start to chat despite the fact that I had headphones on. So I have to stop what I'm doing, take off my headphones, and talk with someone I have 0 interest in talking to. It was absolutely maddening. That's why I don't go to the gym anymore. Give me my home machine and mountain bike any day!
lol, are there actually gyms that have that, or are you talking about a gym's etiquette from its gym-goers? Most people love to talk at my gym, especially while camping out on machines!
