As long as you don't lazily move like many older folks seem to in the lap lanes, you will get significant exercise doing laps.
1) Your whole body is involved if you do a swimming stroke,
2) your body will work extra hard to keep warm which burns more energy and
3) you don't notice the heat you are generating in the water (you don't feel your sweat), so the tendency is to work even harder,
4) the breathing portion of any swim stroke is pranayama and is very good for your brain and body.
There's other side benefits as well - such as the low/no impact component to swimming. There's no pounding, so other than the low risk of over stressing particular joints due to repetitive strain, swimming isn't likely to cause injury.
