This Sunday I will be running in my first large event, the Army 10-Miler in Washington. 35,000 people, 5,000 more than the Boston Marathon. And 4,550 in my wave alone. To me it sounds insane, and cannot wait until race morning just to take it all in.
Prior to that I've only competed in a handful of races:
5k (2 years ago)
5 mile (4 years ago)
Two Sprint Triathlons (both this summer)
Spartan Sprint - at Fenway Park (3 years ago).
All races were done after I reached the age of 50 (am 55 now).
That's pretty great that you do races at 55 and didn't even start until 50. Kudos to you.
I'm in my early 40's and been in athletics most of my life so raced quite a bit. did bunches of 5k fun run type things and a couple of sprint tri's recently. I stopped serious racing a couple of years ago when I gave up trying to move up the category ladder in road cycling. I'm kind of sad about it but I have a good deal of more free time to spend on other activities and family and career.
Although I have worked out my entire life, I just started running in Nov of 2013 at 51 yrs old. In 2014, I ran several (I think 8) 5Ks. Then in 2015 I ran my first half marathon, a 20K and am running another half marathon in 2 weeks...maybe some day a marathon....... maybe

Running is pretty much my life. LOL.
Next up on my sched is the Austin Rock 'n' Roll Marathon.
Did a little 10K trail run last Saturday.
Been running since high school and then college where I competed in track. (800M, 1500M, & 3000M).
Probly have run about a dozen marathons; a couple dozen 10K's; and my latest favorite type of race to run are those mud runs, stuff like the Spartan Run and the Tough Mudders that have been so popular over the past couple years. I do those whenever there IS one in my area, or within an hour's or so drive.
GL on your Army run this weekend. But man, that's waaay too many people for me. LOL
Four years later, I have finished my 3rd half marathon, 4 or 5 10ks, and at least that many 5ks. I have not tried a full yet, and I still think the Ultra folks are just freaking nuts (but kind of amazing), but whonknows, I may try one one day...
I also have in the back of my head that I ought to try a sprint tri one of these days, but I would have to do a lot of of work on the swimming and cycling parts...
1 - Half Marathon
2 - Full Marathons
2 - Spartan Sprints (3rd in Nov)
1 - Spartan Super (2nd in Oct [will earn my Trifecta], 3rd in Nov)
1 - Spartan Beast (past weekend in Tahoe, brutal :O) ).
After the first Super, I discovered that even though I did a lot of running, I wasn't all that strong and started hitting the gym. I trained for the Beast for about 6-months and it did pay off, but doing the multi-rig after 14.5+miles, was not in my wheel house (this time).
Next year we are planning on doing the Ultra Beast (Marathon+ and lots of obstacles).
After Nov, 5 of us in my family will have our Spartan Trifectas. :O)
Too many to list. Really I'm just interested in the after-party. The event itself is simply a conversation necessity for the later. Kind of like attending church when you don't really believe. Church lunch pasta is the best.
A couple of full marathons, one ultra-marathon, a couple of sprint tri's, some 5k's and 10k's. I have also done an Amazing Race.
Although I have done several marathons before, I will be competing in my first half-marathon in a couple of weeks. My wife has been training for it, and I am just going to run beside her for moral support.
