Unless you have some sort of pre-existing injury or sloppy form, absolutely not. The key is to lift with your shoulders, not your legs or lower back. People get hurt when their ego's get the best of them and they rush into doing more weight than they can safely handle.

The same applies for pretty much anything in the gym. Good form, smooth, controlled movements....as yoi get more advanced and you become more in tune with your body you'll know when you can get away with some cheating and more advanced forms of training but as a beginner, you will get plenty of stimulation just from training in a precise, balanced fashion.

But doesn't there come a point where even with correct form too much weight will start hurting you? I have heard stories of people who do deadlifts/squats for many years without noticing any problems, and then one day they suddenly feel horrible and are told by their doctors that their backs are completely messed up as a natural result of doing squats and deadlifts with heavy weight for so many years, even with correct form.

Why would overhead presses be any worse for your back and shoulders than bench presses. People who injure themselves with overhead presses are using too much weight and jerking it. This is why I always do these exercises seated.

Are you sure you have heard actual true stories or are these stories from people who know nothing about lifting and have never lifted in their lives?

I can't begin to count how many people have told me that squats and running will destroy your knees. Yet these people had no evidence and no experience with squats or running so they were just spreading old wives tales.

There are a lot of people with back problems. The overwhelming majority have never lifted weights. The majority of them are overweight.

You should do rotator cuff exercises using bands or the rotatorreliever, or something similar. All of those other exercises will never strengthen the rotator cuff muscles sufficiently. Too many people ignore the smaller muscles in favor of the larger ones.

You mean exercises like Cuban Presses, which are exactly for just that purpose?
