I belonged to a gym that had everything high end. It was huge, Olympic size pool, had every class under the sun, top notch locker rooms, steam rooms, cafe, nutritionist, etc. etc. It was too big and not personal.
I switched to Orange Theory and love it. It's a 60 minute class that uses interval training on treadmills and rowers combined with weights. So much happier!
I sometimes use the gym on campus, but it's a little awkward (mostly young guys, hardly ever any other women), so I use my little set up at home. Nothing fancy: a squat rack, barbell, ez-curl bar, adjustable dumbbells. After we move this summer, I will have the extra space to add a bench.
What equipment and amenities does it have? What's the atmosphere like? Is there anything really special about it?
I go to a Snap Fitness which is barely 5 minutes up the road from where I live. It's a small gym, which is part of the reason why I like it. It's also open 24/7, so that helps as well. I am not ready to deal with the meat heads at Gold's Gym, and I'd also have to drive about 20 minutes down the road to get to the closest Gold's. Same with Planet Fitness. My gym offers personal training packages, and everybody there is super nice, super friendly, and they're always willing to help even if you didn't pay for personal training.
It probably doesn't have what you'll find in Gold's, but it's got enough of what I need to get a great workout in. I know some here scoff at Smith machines, but it has one if you want to do squats or bench press. I'm seeing results so screw those people. I'm not in it to look like a WWE wrestler anyway. Other than that, you have your standard nautilus machines, free weights, cardio machines. But it also has two back rooms. One where I usually do most of my free weight training like military presses and dead lifts, or HIIT stuff, and an exercise room where you can do the video exercises.
I'd like for it to actually have a true free weight bench in there or squat rack, but I think the decision on that has a lot to do with not having a person on staff at all times if you get in trouble.
I use 24/7 fitness, where I got a Costco membership for, I think it is for 2 years and comes down to $15/month.
I have the choice between driving a little further and have old equipment but okay people.
Or closer (ghetto), new facility overlooking the harbor, but mostly crappy, stinky, dirty members
We like it. It's really good for families because there's stuff for the kids to do while you work out. The pools have waterslides and one of them has a cool splash park as well.
Locker rooms are pretty nice. Most of them have jacuzzis in them. Cardio machines are top knotch as are the weight machines.
Overall, we're much happier here than we were with the 24hr Fitness membership we had while still living in the lower 48.

Absolutely nothing special or out of the ordinary.
If I had to do it over again, I'd join a smaller Snap Fitness or mom&pop's gym.
The 24 Hour Fitnesses here in the Bay Area are overcrowded and overpriced.
They are ok though if you can go during off hours.
The only gym chain I would never even consider again is Planet Fitness. It is not even a real gym. It's more like a Holiday Inn hotel gym, only with more space.
Planet Fitness. My main focus right now is losing weight and I do all my cardio outside. I just lift weights to supplement my cardio. So, wanted something cheap, no frills and close to home. Planet fit that bill. I suppose if I planned on entering a bodybuilder contest, yea, I'd spend a little more money for a "higher-level" gym, but I don't plan on that.
