I'm at the gym right now, at 1 AM, the only one in here and its awesome. You can only get in with a keyfob and the parking lot is very well lit. Have never felt unsafe here. There are lone female members that come at all hours....never heard of any of then having an issue.

24hr fitness is usually located in cheaper parts of the city, just like most gyms. So it won't be the safest part of the city. I would say parking is the most concern, try to park close to the entrance which should be easy. If it is garage parking, like underground garage, probably doesn't matter how close to the entrance.

As for the gym itself, it is safe, probably safer in my opinion. Less people so you notice whoever is in there and usually it is the same late night crew.

The OP wrote his post that makes it sound like he's taking public transportation. Parking is not going to be an issue for him/her.

There are two PFs near where I live. Both are located in shopping centers which have plenty of lighting and plenty of parking.

Many times, after a rehearsal that ran long (say, 11 or 11:30PM) some of the cast members would head for PF. They always returned for the next rehearsal so I'd be inclined to say safety wasn't an issue.

For those taking public transportation, I suppose it would depend on whether or not the buses would still be operating when it was time to leave. (Our buses stop running after 9:30/10:00)
Even WalMart isn't open 24 hours.

I live in East Asia. When I go back to East coast US to visit family, I have bad jet lag due to the 12 hour time difference. I always go to the gym at 3am. Its fantastic!
