Today I hit probably my favorite fitness milestone in my 56 years of life. During my 7 mile run today, I eclipsed 1000 miles for the year. I just started running in Apr 2015 which was one year removed from an Achilles rupture. I never really liked running previously, so hitting this many miles and only in July to me is special.

My other personal favorite was when I was lifting for a while. As a 5'10" 160 lb person, my "dream" was to do a 3 plate deadlift. When I was in the midst of my 5x5's, I finally achieved that threshold, and right before my Achilles rupture my 4th set of 5's was 315lbs, and my 5th set was 335lbs. KNowing I once pulled 335 not once but 5 times for this little body felt pretty good.

Congrats on achieving the milestones. Shooting for a 500lb deadlift, although that may take a few months, 3 plate bench and 135lb overhead squats, just to name a few.

Max Army PT test (300 pts) - ACHIEVED (multiple times)

Since I got into strength sports/powerlifting/weightlifting:

Olympic weightlifting:

90kg snatch - ACHIEVED (best was 98kg ~30 yo, BW ~200lbs)
135lb one-arm snatch - ACHIEVED (best was 145lbs w/ right arm, ~30 yo, BW ~200lbs)

Powerlifting:

550lb deadlift - ACHIEVED @ 198lbs BW, age 30 yo
600lb deadlift - ACHIEVED @ 208lbs BW, age 31 yo

current goal - after injury and now at almost 39 yo and back down to 195 lbs, try to get back to 500lb deadlift (currently at about 465lbs)

315lb squat - ACHIEVED @ 155lbs BW, age 27 yo
365lb squat - ACHIEVED @ 175lbs BW, age 28 yo
405lb squat - ACHIEVED @ 187lbs BW, age 28 yo
450lb squat - ACHIEVED @ 195lbs BW, age 30 yo
495lb squat - NOT ACHIEVED (best was 490lbs @ 207lbs BW, age 32 yo)

current goal - after injury just trying to get back to 450lbs, currently sitting at about a 420-425 lb max

200lb bench - ACHIEVED @ 150lbs BW, age 27 yo
250lb bench - ACHIEVED @ 180lbs BW, age 27 yo
275lb bench - ACHIEVED @ 190lbs BW, age 28 yo
300lb bench - ACHIEVED @ 200lbs BW, age 30 yo
315lb bench - ACHIEVED @ 205lbs BW, age 32 yo

current goal - get back up to 275 which is going to be a slow road after dealing with bad AC joint and formerly torn levator scap, currently at about 260lbs

Other:
20 pullups - ACHIEVED (best was 21 @ ~190lbs BW, 33 yo) currently can do 16 pullups at ~200lbs BW at 38 yo and trying to get back up to 20!

Other current goals - lift without any lower back pain, start running again and hit a sub-6:00 mile again, get back up to a 240lb power clean

I would love a 3 plate bench press. That's kind of a dream for me, not one I'm sure will ever happen. I would be very happy with 300 pounds, which is just below that, but again not sure. It's frustrating in a way because if I had never had any rotator cuff injuries, I would have decent (50%) confidence that one day I could bench 300 pounds. But I'm 33 years old, so if I'm going to do this, it really should be in the next 2-3 years. If it doesn't happen by then, it's hard to imagine it ever happening. I set a new personal record yesterday with 240, though. I'm not sure, I could have possibly done 240 in the past, but I'm pretty sure I never exceeded that.

For me, I think I was probably most pleased with doing 225 for the first time in my 30s and first time since I was about 21, which was last summer or late spring. I had been working out for about 9 months, getting back in shape, dropped from 210 pounds to 167 or so with 9% body fat. I gained a little bit back by focusing more on strength gains, so when I benched 225 I believe I weighed 172 or so, but very low body fat percentage still. When I first benched 225, sure, I was super excited and it was an amazing feeling, but being young, I think I somewhat took it for granted. I also think I didn't value it highly enough, because being in college and splitting my workouts between a 24 Hour Fitness downtown when I was home and the state college gym, I saw tons of guys doing 225 and plenty more doing 275, 300, 315 pounds. I thought of 225 as just starting to enter that "respectable" range, but if you look at actual reality among the entire population worldwide, very few people -- probably 1 in 1,000 -- will ever bench press 225 pounds at all, let alone for reps. It's easy to assume it's something that a large percentage of people do when you're surrounding yourself with people who go to the gym frequently and who are all 18 to 30 years old and male.

When I did it again at 32 years old, it took a lot more work to build up to that point and looking at people I went to high school with, it was a great feeling knowing I was in the best shape of my life and many of the people I know had beer bellies, stopped lifting years ago, and started to decline. I also think before I started working out actively again, I started to feel "old." Just not quite like my young in shape self. By focusing on my fitness so intensely, I felt at the peak of my health. My resting heart rate dropped to 47, without anything but elliptical and weights, body fat below 10%, and a 225 pound bench press for reps (8) meant my calculated one rep max bench press was in the borderline "elite" category on most charts, in the advanced range for my age, anyway.

Maybe my other BS milestone that I laugh the most about and like to recall is one time when I was 21, I had just finished an hour-plus chest workout with heavy weights. My trainer left the gym and I decided to kill some extra time, not sure why, but I had a lot of energy. I had debates with some people I knew who were big cardio fans and bragged about running constantly, blah blah, how if I just do weight lifting I can't be in great cardio shape. I know that's completely wrong as weight lifting is AMAZING cardio, otherwise you're just doing it wrong. It taxes your entire body and your heart will be strong and healthy without ever touching anything cardio. I hadn't hiked, run, used an elliptical, or done anything at all for cardio by that point nor did I care about it (and still don't much). I decided to prove what I already knew and after this intense chest workout, hopped on the treadmill. I cranked it up and I ran a 6 minute flat mile with no training, no cardio experience, and the last time I was a runner was in middle school where I was a lightning fast sprinter. I've always hated endurance running. Most of the people I knew who bragged about cardio were chicks doing 8 minute miles and saying how great that was, or guys talking about their 7 minute miles.

That ended any of that nonsense. I told them I casually ran a 6 minute mile AFTER an intense chest workout of benching 225, so please don't talk to me about how great your cardio workouts are. If you're interested in some real exercise, lift some heavy weights and you won't need to worry about your mile times. They'll come anyway. I've still found that to be 100% true. I didn't use elliptical for a while, just weights, and went back to it a few weeks ago and didn't break a sweat or feel it much to do it again. Weight lifting is an exhausting cardiovascular activity, so I'm not sure where this misinformation gets spread.

My fitness goal is simple: not get injured. Me being injured is no good for anyone, grumpy and irritated until I can get back to being active.

Congrats on your goal, that is great.

ShampooBanana, those are quite some achievements!

When I weighed 175lbs at 5'7" a month ago, I hit a 515lb deadlift, 405lb squat, 285lb bench, 185lb overhead press, 16 pull ups, 225lbs X 5 bent over rows, and 60 push ups. I wish I could jump and reach the 10ft rim. I'm about 4 or 5 inches off.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade but a 3 plate bench press means you've got some pretty big pecs. Unless you have a naturally short and stocky build huge pecs don't look good on a man IMO. I will acknowledge that 315lbs is a heck of a lot of weight and is certainly quite an accomplishment.

I was up to 26 chin ups (underhand grip) before my honeymoon several years ago. I'm currently trying to get back to the 20 mark.

Jack LaLanne did some great fitness feats related to his (old) age. With that in mind, sometime before my next birthday in about 3 months, I'm going to try to lift my age.
I'll have two dumbbells, each loaded with my age in pounds and I will lift them both for as many reps as my age in a 4-exercise, upper body complex (curls, overhead press, bent over rows, and flys). Form must be strict and the time limit will be my age x 2 in seconds. Try it yourself.
