I suggest you check the great Youtube channel called Athlean-X : the host (who is a physiotherapist) has dozens of vids to explain how to not snap some sh*t when you workout, based on his professional experience. So let's not underestimate the injury risk shall we.

I'm 42, is that close enough to 45?

I do barbell squats, deadlifts, clean/jerk, snatches, bench press and overhead press every week. I have been injured exactly zero times since I started weight training - exclusively with free weights - about 7 years ago.

Maybe I'm just lucky? Either that, or it's because I perform the movements correctly. One of the two, for certain.

No I guess it's because you have a proper form and don't do bad exercises. Also you are not driven by your ego (many dudes go for the extra rep or the extra pound because of their ego, and end up in Snap-City before they know it )

I've used machines for years. Only when I haven't had access to a gym have I used free weights. I'm 61, never been injured lost 25 lbs and went from a size 14 to a size 8, all using the machines at the gym.

I hear people over and over again saying machines are worthless. However my results prove different and I would rather someone use the machines than not go to the gym at all.

Come on man, some guys even lift at 60 years old, no problem. As long as he has good form and goes easy on the weight, he will be fine. Stallone, who turned 70, still lifts

Because most of them aren't made for short people like me.

That's weird, I see some people who are like 5'3 using machines and they don't have any problem (not that I don't believe you, I guess the cheaper machines don't let you adjust the seat etc.)

Ha, that's because I'm only 4'10! Leg curls, hyperextension, and a few others I can't use due to my height. The only machine that I like to use is the cable machine and sometimes leg press. Even with the cable machine, I have to find a stool (or a hot, tall gym guy) somewhere to pull the cable down for me.

It's about diet and metabolism. Geez...
Unless I get struck by lightning or catch some fatal disease, I have no doubt I will be in much better shape than Arnold when I hit 69. I doubt he has been doing much lifting for at least a decade.

You're obviously a youngster. I'm 61 and have not lost any strength. I'm one of the strongest guys at my gym, but I have run into older guys who are much stronger than me. Consistency over decades is what is most important.

Moving the goalposts, now?

I have zero doubt I'll be saying the same thing when I'm 52. See you in 10 years.
