I find it easier to stick to healthy diet plan if & only if I work out. some how the aching muscle and tightening in abs is great reminder not to go for that donut. If I skip workout for a week, soon enough I will lose my diet plan too.

Exercise is more used to keep the body from having issues, when done in moderation things like stretching (I use P90X Stretch X once every week) along with jogging keep things "limber" and "loose" .. if I stop jogging usually after about 3 weeks my back will "go out" somewhere from the lack of movement, or I'll get a flare up of sciatica which is kept under complete control with mild to moderate stretching ... alternately you can lay on the floor and do back rollers or jump on a rebounder for a few minutes a day.. all this type of static and ballistic movement helps to keep the body stretched and loose.

I can tell when I've gone too long without doing the Stretch X program.

I'd say flexibility and loosening of muscles are probably the most important side effects of exercise, though I believe mild to moderate cardio (jogs of 2-4 miles 2 or 3 times a week in the summer) has benefits as well. For me, road biking is my summer joy. Only about 1200-1500 miles a summer... I'm not gonna destroy my body going 5000 to 10000 or anything. kayaking is fun, too. The people who run a lot of marathons or overdo it though will feel it when they get older.. light exercise is actually healthier for you than super intense or long duration exercise. The more you use stuff the more it will wear... like taking a piece of 12 gauge copper wire and bending it over and over.

I will always exercise most days of the week for overall health benefits. That said, only recently have I learned just how few calories I can consume and not gain weight. My metabolism has slowed DRASTICALLY in the last 5 years, despite being as physically active as I ever was. I tried numerous "diets" without losing even one pound, (e.g., gave up all alcohol, then gave up sugar, NO weight loss after 2 months); finally I have learned that at my age, I really cannot consume more than 1500 - 1800 calories without gaining weight. This has been a shock to me but I am now mindful of everything I put in my mouth. Still 10 pounds overweight but it is SLOWLY coming off. Living on oatmeal, fresh fruits and veggies and lean protein; very little of anything else (well, back to drinking wine; if I have to starve I will allow some empty calories to numb the pain) but, that's it.

that seems way too restrictive to me and unsustainable. you could also accept that things are different being older and try to work with that. find a weight that you can maintain and makes you happy. personally, i eat 1500 calories five days per week and quite a bit more two days per week. i work out four times per week. keeps me sane.

That's actually a great thing, if you can maintain your weight with so few calories. Your grocery bill must be very low.

Every person is different. Some need to exercise and eat better. Some can just get by on exercising. Some can just eat better and not exercise. And some will be small or large no matter what.

I've dropped 50lbs this past year. I moderated my diet to a net 1,500 calories a day and I walk or hike at least 4 miles s day. That's dedicated walking not counting 'steps' throughout the day.

Seems to work fine.

Many times a dysfunctional relationship with food, and lots of exercise,
goes hand-in-hand.
