I am sure you know abs are made in the kitchen. They are there you just have to burn the fat on top.

Having said that, at age 50 I can easily see my 6 packs mostly because they are well developed.

I do a lot of sets, including the above along with the crunch machine, cable pull down, etc,

Of the two, hanging leg raises are more intense but not sure if the intensity is due to the upper body involvement or the abs.

There are arm swings that you can use, achieves the same goal but makes focusing on the lower abs easier. I do 3 sets of 20 every other day.

From 50 years of observation, 90+% of people cannot do hanging leg raises, for obvious reasons. So for them, of the two that you mentioned, the option would be the captain's chair. Of course those two are not the only ways to develop abs.

I can only do knee raises (not leg) from my hanging bar. But it does the job for me.

Definitely true. I've had many high school students attempt them in physical education classes and it is usually only a few wrestlers who can do even one.

Years ago I could not do one and made a serious attempt to start doing them. You have to build up the endurance in your arms. I started with arm straps to help support my weight. I also did the captain's chair and a bent knee version of hanging leg raises to build ab strength.

Captain's chair is soooooo much easier. I prefer the hanging leg raises though. Hanging leg raises are far superior. But there are soooo many more things that need to be done to actually get six pack and the "V". Most important thing is food intake.

Here are some good variations to consider:

Or go beyond regular hanging leg raise with hanging leg raise -- toe to bar.

Lotsa luck with this one:

If you don't have something to hang on, but you have a bench, try dragon flags. A properly performed dragon flag might be the hardest ab exercise out there. Bruce Lee was known for doing these often.

Please note: the frontal abdominal muscles are the only muscles in our bodies that do not move anything. They only provide support so our guts don't explode out as we increase intra-abdominal pressure as we work other muscles.

Flexing the thigh on the abdomen (ie- sitting up or doing some form of leg lift) is accomplished by the psoas mm.

Any "ab exercise" is really just an isometric. The typical "lower back ache" is caused by unequal tension &/or spasm of the psoas. I always cringe when I see someone doing some form of sit up/leg raise with resistance-- a back ache waiting to happen.

Ab workouts with weight resistance will put some serious 3D abs on ya. To showcase your 3D abs, you need a very strict and grueling diet <----the hardest part.
