I'm a bit old fashioned... ok... a lot old fashioned. I exercise a lot... running and swimming mostly, but not at health clubs or in groups... just me pounding at it. Anyway, I keep seeing athletes with bands around their legs or arms; what the h*ll are they? What are they called? What is the material? and what is the idea behind them? Do they do what they're supposed to?
Thanks!

Counting Down - I think I know what you mean and I often have wondered. You're referring to the black (usually) straps encircling the leg for example just below the knee?

Could be a heart rate monitor. I've seen them strapped on the top of the arm and wrist.

I did some quick 'net searching, and all I could really find had to do with tendon support or something like that. For example, tennis players who suffer from "tennis elbow" wear straps or cords beneath the elbow joint for compression to alleviate the tendonitis (or something like that.)

My curiosity asks why these things don't restrict blood flow. (Can y'all tell I'm not an athlete anymore and not in-the-know of what's best these days??)

I had tennis and golfers elbow (yes, lucky me) and wore one of those just below my elbow - it is supposed to take some of the muscle pressure away from the tendon area whilst it heals.

I think folks have already answered your question about the arm bands, most likely they are being worn for tennis elbow they are called counterforce braces and they are designed to rest the origin of the extensor tendons at the elbow.

The lower leg bands are ChoPat Straps. They are used primarily for chondromalacia or "runners knee". The idea is that they stabilize the knee cap by holding the patella tendon in place and keeping the patella in its groove. Many folks with jumpers knee or runners knee swear by them
