I really don't like the idea of turning the gym into a hangout / social club, especially if you are serious about working out. For myself, the gym is a place of focus and work. The socializing ends up becoming a distraction that undermines the purpose of why I go there.
My Planet Fitness is basic, no sauna, no steam room, no hot tub. I rarely talk to anyone and they don't seem that friendly. Only people that I have known before going there seem to be friendly. In the locker room, no one seems to talk or socialize. Perhaps they think they will be stalked or gawked at. I wish people were more friendly. I mostly go 3 times a week for about an hour and then I am gone.

I totally agree, you go there to work out, give it your all and then leave. Perhaps to some people who have nothing else to do,they use it as a social environment and love to chat with anyone who will listen.
I’m definitely not rude and if spoken to I will respond politely, however I am there for one reason and its certainly not to socialize or chat!
When I was a member at a gym years ago I used to go after work and when I didn't feel like working out I would hit the racquet ball court or shoot some hoops. They had a juice bar but I didn't hang out there.
