You answered your own question: Because they want to socialize while getting some fresh air. That's not nearly so easy while running.

I trail run solitary, aged 61. Do some hiking too. Running doesn't seem to be more stressful than walking for me, but then I'm never on pavement. My feet are a bit sore the following day but absolutely no issues with the knees.

BTW, I've found that hiking a very steep trail at a fast pace is actually more of a workout than running on flat or mildly sloped terrain. Running up a very steep trail is really tough, maybe more of a workout than I want!

In general I agree with your premise though. If you're trying to get into good shape/increase the VO2 max (or just maintain what you've got) then running or biking is obviously superior to walking.

I love running more than any activity, but I also love my joints and especially the knees. So now I interject running and jumping within a walk more carefully and less frequently. It's really eye opening how aging can impact our routines. AS for the women you're apparently stalking, I suspect not everyone is in to reaching a target rate, but maybe just a nice breath of fresh air with a friend. That sounds really nice right now. I miss is. My advice to you is to worry about yourself, stop stalking and judging others.

There are people who have problems and they can't run for them it's better to at least go for a walk to be fit. I too like walking & I go for a walk everyday.

Just because you see someone only walking outside doesn't mean they aren't also doing some other strenuous activity during their day. For some it might be swimming, or dancing, or lifting weights. Or maybe they played tennis earlier. Or something else. I love to walk in addition to many other activities during my day.

Walking isn't just about exercise for some. It may be a form of meditation, clearing ones head. It may be an opportunity for fresh air and sunshine or simply taking the dog out. A time to relax.

Yes. Typically when it is warm enough and I can go to the gym, I walk about once a week for about an hour and then for about 25 minutes during the lunch break on the 3 days a week I can work from home. On other days, I might hike, go to a gym class, or use the elliptical+do weights. I typically try to do 4mph on average, although it’s been slower lately since there are more people out and I have to try to avoid them.

You?
That won't last, trust me. It's inevitable you'll surely encounter back, hip, knee, foot, ankle overuse injuries running on pavement day after day, month after month, year after year.

I think this thread was created in jest. I cannot believe anyone could not comprehend how people would choose to walk vs. run.

Why don't people bench 300lbs vs. 50lbs?

Why can't people do 100 pull ups vs 10?

Why can't people dunk a basketball instead of just laying it up?

Ridiculous.

I've been doing it for 25 years (although with some elliptical workouts switched in every now and then, admittedly).

Inevitable? I guess you have something against running.

Ankle overuse? That's a new one.

Yes, you caught me. OMG I'm so embarrassed! I hate runners, all of them! I wish people who run every day would just disappear from the Earth forever!

In all seriousness, WTH are you talking about? You've never heard of an ankle getting injured after years and years of daily running? I guess you and OP must be like 14 years old.

I've run a certain 10K every year for the past 25 years. A guy I went to high school with has a 43 year streak in the same race. He ran high school and college cross country and track before that. Neither of us have had ankle problems. I have sprained ankles numerous times from playing basketball.

I've post about this guy before who died at aged 91 in 2015. He ran his last race when he was 90.
