Who cares? People are going to do what they’re going to do, regardless. People still smoke cigarettes for God’s sake and we know that kills people.
pretty sure tiger had some other things going on that could have resulted in his present state of health. he went from 165 to 215 in weight and he had several back surgeries, just to name two. i just can't see running being the causation of where he is now.
I know people who have done nothing more in their life than get on and off the couch, and their body and knees are destroyed.
Ain't that the truth. Under use may be more problematic than over use.
I played basketball from about age 14-45. Tennis from age 25 to present. Running trails from age 50 to present (61). My knees are fine.
My sisters have never participated in any sports, nor any recreational running. They are within 3 years of me in age on either end. Both of them have had knee operations and probably will need knee replacements in the near future.
I think the surface you run on makes a difference. I think a natural surface (trail) is going to at least absorb some of the impact where as on an artificial surface like a road or sidewalk your leg/body is taking all the impact.
I run a fair bit but it's exclusively on trails. If I had to run on pavement/sidewalks I'd be doing it a lot less.
Returning from a lousy game of golf yesterday I thought about Tiger and the importance of staying fit even for golf. I appreciate that he's come out to say this. As one who loves to run, I love my knees more.
So many factors come into play. Genetics, fitness, diet, repetition, environment, disease. Every individual ages differently. Healthy people have died suddenly in their 30's where people that live unhealthy lifestyles have lived to be 100. Those are exceptions to the general population but again, everyone is different. I have a friend that made over 2000 parachute jumps and is now near 80. He has some back and knee issues but does surprisingly well. I wonder that he can walk at all with all the bone jarring impacts he has put his axial skeleton through.
