But how about our immune and gut health? Why isn't this preached as much?
I bring this up because I have a relative who's terribly overweight...Lets get the conversation started on this sensitive matter, I want to see your thoughts, opinions, emotional outburst!
There is no comparison, and no conversation on comparison is necessary because being fat is not contagious. Your relative isn't going to kill other people by being fat...unless he/she falls on somebody from some height.
Putting on a mask isn't going to make you healthy though. Its not like you put on a mask --and BOOM--you're immune system is healthy and impenetrable. Wearing a mask give a lot of people a false sense of security.
Sure, exercise is not easy but its not supposed to be. And we have more access to inexpensive and healthy food then we did 20 years ago.
I come from the ghetto, from the hood. Back in the day the quality of food was quite trash, I will say. Nowadays? It's different. The quality of healthy food has went up a great amount. There's easier access to ALDI with cheap, inexpensive and good quality food. You don't need to be rich or make a lot of money to be healthy. Nor do you have to be rich, wealthy or make a great amount of money to MOVE. MOVEMENT IS MANDATORY..
Yes, I know putting on a mask doesn't make you healthy. However, putting on a mask, which does a lot to reduce your exposure to covid especially if others around you are too, is a lot easier than changing your diet and exercise habits. That's my point. It doesn't improve your immune system, but it easily protects you to an extent. (BTW, having a strong immune system does not mean you're immune to covid.)
And I disagree with your contention that healthy food is cheap and more plentiful now than decades ago. Most packaged, shelf-stable foods are filled with additives that encourage you to eat more bad food. High-fructose corn syrup and all its friends are in most everything that's not a piece of produce or protein. Plus they never go bad, unlike produce and meat.
People spend more at fast food restaurants now than they did 20 years ago. That used to be a treat for my family growing up. Now families regularly dine on fast food every week.
I will say regardless of where you stand politically on the virus, it should be a wake up call on taking much better care of yourself. I've seen some people workout, exercise and be active more than ever during this pandemic. And then again, I've seen some people continue to neglect their health and just want to wait on the government to tell them how to treat their own bodies.
At the end of the day, we have to understand that our bodies are our temples and we have to CLEAN our temple, maintain, give maintenance to our temple. Our bodies are our engines and we have to treat it as such. Rev it up and cool it down, give it the proper fuels.
I agree people should be exercising more, even if it's just going for a walk. And I have seen more people in my neighborhood out and about. But so many people don't have the willpower or knowledge or extra time, or safe place to exercise. Plus the law of inertia. I'm sure for many it feels hopeless. Again, the medical establishment has been harping on the benefits of exercise for decades, much of it falling on deaf ears.
You're right, overall, about a lot of this. But the solution is more complicated than just telling people they should do this.
I don't agree that people are working out now more than ever. Do you have any studies that back this up? Everything I've read says that the US becomes more and more unhealthy with each passing year.
You believe everything you read then?
If everything you read said that men can now start giving birth through their mouth, would you believe that? Or do a little bit more investigating?
I'm not making the claim that people are getting healthier. I simply made an observation and there's no denying that social media influencers have made exercising a lot more of a trend.

The LA Fitness I frequently go to at opening time, and in that 1st hour between 6 and 7 AM is just running at 25 % occupancy at best. Of course in Miami Dade County is MANDALORIAN (mandatory ) to wear a Mask and that turns off many individuals that do not want to go with the Flow of The Law and I say better for us, we can work out quietly and not have to deal with Idiots, enough of them I have seen since March making fools of themselves.

Good for you for continuing to move.

Hahaha! Well, I certainly hope she doesn't fall on someone.
However, being obese leads to many other sicknesses and makes it easier to be at risk to many more sicknesses. Also, she's being a burden to herself and eventually, she'll be a burden on the healthcare system and be even more a burden to the family.
When you don't care of your health, its a burden you have to pay for or possibly your family does (if you have any).

Well, if people can sit around and "Netflixing" they can prioritize their time to get healthy. I get it, I do. Many of us live busy lives but there's always a way to get in a little exercise. You don't need a gym membership, don't need fancy equipment, don't need to have a super strict diet (depending on your goals of course), don't need to exercise for hours on end. There's really no excuse, we have more available to us than any other time in history.
Get out and MOVE! Jeez, you live in Fl..ok, summers if you want to walk, bike, jog..do it early or late.. Take a swim!
Once say Nov-March rolls around the weather is SO conducive to power walking, jogging, biking..
We are not living in the Northeast where from Thanksgiving to May, its darn cold outside and takes effort to walk or jog outside..
Take advantage of doing something! Join a Y, aqua water classes, Zumba, dance, swimming(so easy on the joints)..
Besides the physical health advantages, walking can release endorphins, similar to antidepressants..
Get some sun and Vitamin D...The health experts are saying that Vitamin D and Vitamin C can help protect against Covid19..
Great for the immune system!
Just DO IT! Who wants to sit inside?

You don’t get it.
I see from your profile you’re a single man with no children. There’s so much you don’t have on your plate. Your unwillingness to concede there are very real, significant roadblocks to people, especially during Covid times, exercising and eating right belies your claim in your OP that this would be a discussion. And saying, “yeah, but they should anyway” isn’t helpful and doesn’t advance the discussion.
I think everyone agrees with better eating and more movement being a goal. It certainly is part of the foundation of my life. That doesn’t mean I don’t understand why some people can’t/don’t.
Anyhow, this thread seems to be more virtue signaling for the OP than a real discussion so I’m out.

So you know my entire life based on my profile? Based on information I choose not to disclose?
If everything you read said that men can now start giving birth through their mouth, would you believe that? Or do a little bit more investigating?
One doesn't have to do investigating on his/her own, that's why peer reviewed STUDIES are performed. But it sounds like you've got it all figured out. You don't read but you "see it on social media." LOL, exactly what is wrong with this world nowadays. Good luck.
But how about our immune and gut health? Why isn't this preached as much?
I bring this up because I have a relative who's terribly overweight. In fact and truthfully, she is overweight. She complains about people not wearing mask and keeping their distance. Meanwhile, she'll go and smoke a pack of cigarettes or more a day, eat disgusting and doesn't move. MOVEMENT IS MANDATORY, something she does very little of. And if we're going to be totally realistic, her health is at risk from other sicknesses besides COVID exclusively.
During this pandemic (whether you question it or not), we have been slapped upside the head about wearing mask, social-distancing and more of the COVID "fare". However, I personally haven't heard anything coming from the main narrative about taking care of your immune system and gut health. We just keep being told that there's nothing that can help us but a vaccine and following the rules placed during this COVID era.
Yet, hand sanitizers kill the virus, basic hand washing kills the virus. Cool.
How about eating right, exercising, dieting? No? Boosting your immune system, no?
Lets get the conversation started on this sensitive matter, I want to see your thoughts, opinions, emotional outburst!
Yeah, I feel the same way. It seems like the ones who are always lecturing about wearing a mask, etc., are the most out of shape.

Why do people say "even if it's just going for a walk"?? Walking is the best most natural exercise. If you walk fast it's as good as anything. And it's easy, and safe, and doesn't cost anything.
