The two major gyms in our city are less crowded one gym changed their operating hours, and the other updated their equipment ( to mixed results) and it’s unreal to see all the empty parking spaces.
Ours depends a lot on what day/hour it is. SWAMPED from opening until about noon, Monday to Friday. After noon it clears out, and empty on Saturdays (never went on a Sunday). Evenings could be busy, I've just never been there around that time.
Our facility has a lot of retirees, so the busy times reflect that.

I go 5 days a week at 5 to 7. Normal fluctuations in numbers , Maybe down 10 %. Having two new gyms which are even more crowded than mine might influence that.
No, my gym is busy , more people came back after COVID. Even when I went to the Border in Texas to work, I joined Planet Fitness (no other gyms there) for a month and 1/2 and exercised there, it was pretty busy too. It must be the location you are on, or people are going to other gyms in your area.
Part of the decline may be people cutting gymmemberships in order to pay for higher food, housing, and energy prices.
I doubt this accounts for much of the decline. My YMCA provides financial assistance if you can’t afford the full membership fees. Planet Fitness is very inexpensive. People make too much of inflation. Gas prices have been higher. Renters are probably impacted the most.
I think many people dropped their memberships or got out of the habit during Covid. I know one guy who I haven't seen since before Covid. There is another guy who I have seen one time since my Y reopened, so I/m pretty sure he still has his membership but got out of the habit. It happens. I once had a gym membership for over a year and did not work out a single time. I held on to the membership and started working out again and haven't stopped in over 30 years.
I don't know if it's so much "got out of the habit" as "are still terrified of Covid." I know an alarming number of people who are and will never get over it... It did a number on them! However, it sounds from the responses like most people's gyms are doing just fine; I suspect it's this person's gym, specifically, that's "emptying."

I don't know anyone who is still terrified of Covid. I got all the vaccines and boosters, wore masks when they were mandated, etc. I was back to the gym as soon as they reopened. Most people I talk to think the Covid response was overblown. My wife and I had it recently and it was very mild and the symptoms only lasted for a few days.

I know many of the same type of people, I guess. Believe me, they're out there. I occasionally still see one driving alone in his or her car wearing a mask.
