Not sure what you mean by "basic trips to the gym". Do you mean best shoes to WEAR on your walks to the gym or best shoes to wear for working out at the gym?

Walking - Although I dont really walk, except for putzing around the malls, my favorite walking shoes are my old running shoes. They are light, confortable and give great cushion. Most running shoes from Saucony, Brooks and even the Nike+ shox are great for walking or running on treadmill. If you run, new running shoes are the best but be sure they fit and dont put too many miles of running in them.

General gym/aerobics - Any general cross trainer shoe will do. Again, I have a preference of Nike for general all-purpose cross trainers.

Weight training - for heavy lifting/squats nothing beats the old Converse Chuck Taylor all stars. They are flat and are perfect for heavy days of squats, hip sled, leg press, etc.

Thanks! Sorry - I'm pretty much a treadmill (walk/jog), eliptical and weights (but not too heavy) kinda gal...

Get a good pair of running shoes even if you're not actually running. They're lightweight with plenty of support and stability. Be sure to replace them every 300 to 500 miles, depending on your weight, the surface you walk on, etc.

I wore Nike Shox for years, except on leg days.

Recently switched to Under Armor's new shoe line and purchased the cross training design. Never going back, they are unbelievable.
