When I look at myself in the mirror in the morning, I could swear my muscles are smaller than they are a few hours later, even though I haven't exercised. Is this just my imagination, or is it that while I'm sleeping all the upper body muscles I've exercised are contracted as part of their regenerative process?

I've never heard of this before, and have not noticed it with myself, though maybe in the morning I'm too groggy to notice much of anything. I have heard that you're a little taller when you first get out of bed than you are in the evening, because the vertebrae compress a little while you stand and sit. Even though I've never before heard about this phenomenon of smaller muscles in the morning, I would not doubt the possibility. Maybe it's similar to the way you look pumped up after working out, only in reverse. You're least active while sleeping, so maybe there is lower blood flow through the body, and the muscles appear smaller because they are not fully engorged with blood. I don't know, but there's one possibility.
