I don't like gyms either. But instead of listing what I hate about them, I thought I'd list what I like about working out at home.
1. Convenience. I don't have to drive to and from the gym, use their showers, or wait for my favorite machines to become available. I can exercise when I want and not have to wipe anyone else's sweat off.
2. No distractions. You have people at gyms trying to get a date, chatting with their friends, making loud noises, etc. Sure you see a lot of really attractive women with great bodies, but that's only going to ruin my concentration. When I workout, I want to be able to focus on good form and getting the most out of each workout.
3. No worries about being self-conscious. When you see a guy benching more weight than you or who has bigger muscles than you, it's hard to not be a little self-conscious. Or you see the really hot girl, but don't want her to see you with a small dumbbell so you get a weight that's too much for you or injure yourself cause you pushed too hard. At least at home, I don't have to worry about that sort of thing.
4. You can experiment. At home, I can try a different exercise or practice getting the form right and not have to worry about someone waiting on me.
My gym forbids cell phone use on cardio equipment, but I understand the annoyance factor. Also, we have anti-bacterial spray bottles all over, and everyone uses them, so no one in my gym would dare to leave a sweaty bench. I would complain fiercely to the management if that were occurring, I can assure you!! I would also complain about the language - that should never be allowed.
Frankly I think you need a new gym!!! That sounds awful!
I love going to the gym...always have.
I go to a 'lady gym' and I love it- no men. My beef is actually the no cell phone rule. I leave my kiddos at home, and sometimes I do have to check in on them
I wonder why it's not ok to talk on a cell phone, but it is perfectly ok for two people to talk to each other by yelling over the music and equipment??
I hate them, too! I just do my stuff at home. I don't want to be changing clothes a zillion times a day, and having to make time to go....nope--it's not for me!
Hate them too. I joined gyms twice in my life. First time I lasted almost 3 months. Second time, a few years later, 6 weeks. For all the reasons mentioned already, especially that I always seemed to find an excuse why I didn't have the time to get changed, drive to the gym, spend the hour there, then drive home. Too much time, too much energy. But then that's just me.
I used to run regularly but heel problems have put a stop to that. Hopefully only temporarily, but if not, I can manage, and do enjoy, power-walking around the big park I live near. I bring my dog sometimes and he either follows me, or does a smaller, inner circle and plays with other dogs. I prefer being outdoors for my exercise. Our weather here in Perth, Australia is pretty good for exercising outdoors. Lots of dry, sunny days. On the really hot days, I go either really early in the morning or later in the day.
We have a weight machine at home and I do some weights about 3 times a week, while watching TV. I am paranoid about getting those "bingo wings" arms older women can get so have been concentrating on upper body weight lifting.
I hate germs and god knows that a public gym is loaded with them! 10 years ago I did not mind but the older I get I enjoy working out with my husband in our home gym. It's really nice. We have everything that we want or need with equip AND we have a beautiful view of our pool and green nature surroundings becuz of all the glass windows we have in our work out room. It's nice to also be able to open the windows for fresh air while we work out if we choose2, when in a public gym atmosphere you can't do this. I also have my stand up tanning bed and massage table set up in our gym. It's perfect for us. It's everything I always wanted for a home gym and it motivates me daily.

BOy if I had all that too I'd never join the gym. You're lucky to have the space
I've signed up for gym memberships before, but I've always found that I can't stand going there. I don't mind the equipment and working out, it's the posers that drive me crazy! And among other things:
* People talking on cell phones on the treadmills,
* Men making lots of loud, grunting noises while lifting heavy weights
* People who sweat excessively and work on equipment I want to use
* Loud potty talk during workouts
I'd always leave the gym in a bad mood, so I finally bought some weights for working out at home and took up running.
Anyone else not like gyms?
I will never train in a gym again and love the solitude of my garage or the many areas of the complex outdoors where I can get a nice workout completed. It's membership on MY terms and no loud, obnoxious people to deal with.
You should be refreshed, de-stressed and stimulated from working out and if the atmosphere that you described is what you must deal with, then it's time to leave. You don't want a situation like that to sour you against excercise. Good luck.
