It depends on your weight. If you're carrying around too much then it is hard to run at high speeds. You have to have form too. Watch the hicham el guerrouj video and watch his form. He is not doing a soccer trot. You gotta break out of that low gear you are in. You should be getter faster and faster as you run. If you are running the same speed each week you are not pushing yourself. Your upper body should be relaxed, your arms should be moving slightly backwards and forwards, not like a sprinter who goes up and down. You shouldn't be lifting your knees too high or bouncing when you run. You should have to breathe harder when you run. I would definately cut down on the amount you run if you are running an hour every time. I run 10 k's and only run more than an hour once a week. The other times I run 30-40 min unless I'm doing a speed session.
I consider myself an average runner. I come in the middle of the pack in a race and I run 6:40-6:50 min/mile in a race of 6.2 miles. That is about 9 mph. In practice I warm up on the treadmill about 7 mph and average about 7.5-8 mph. The most important thing about a treadmill is that you are not running at a 0% incline. You won't be building much leg muscle to improve. You need to set it at least 2-3% and during your run occasionaly move it up to 4 or 5%. It would be better to push yourself for 20 minutes than to do an hour-long trot.

Uhhh....I'm a 40+ woman who does 7.5-8 minute miles...and I consider myself slow. Women who win races in my age group do 6:30s and under.

Good, smart , dedicated training is the key!

1 mi. in 6 min= 6 min/mile. That is crazy good for longer distances (say 10K and above). At that pace you would run a 10K in sub 40...which is considered a very respectable time.

In my younger days I would shoot for 6X6....so looking at 36-40 minutes.

In my 40's I am happy with anything under 50 for a 10k. My last 10K(with minimal training--I'm more of a cyclist now) was right under 48 min.

maybe instead of starting at 5...start at 6 or 6.5.

I usually walk for a minute then instantly go into a run at about 6.6 and go up from there.

But I don't run all that much anyway, could I yes? But I choose not to because it can burn too much and go into burning muscle which is not what I want.

Its not easy, but its not superhuman. Actually, I would say that is pretty good for a professional boxer to bust out that type of effort. I'm not sure what weight class boxer you are talking about, but I'm guessing they are fairly muscular guys. Muscular guys generally are not efficient runners!
