There is a formula based on Roman Legionnaire metrics which includes height to stride.

So it is how tall you are which determines what is typical. Of course, health and road gradient.

That is of course, if you wish to set yourself to one of the best marching standards.

If it takes you an hour to walk one mile then you're only walking at a pace of one mile an hour. On a flat level surface the average person should be able to walk one mile in about 17 to 20-21 minutes.

If I'm by myself, about 12-13 minutes per mile. If my dog is along more like 15.

i walk about 3.5 to 3.8 mph at a normal pace, so it would take me a little less than 20 mins i would imagine.

yes, 3-4 miles per hour would be average. I can do this with a backpack on and on unlevel terrain with no issues.

On a treadmill at the air conditioned gym I walk much faster, but on my neighborhood trail it's 4 mi/hr, or a little over. The terrain is not level and often there's the sun.

I have a 30" inseam. I can easily walk 3.5 to 4 mph, but it's not my normal speed. I probably walk 2.7-2.9 naturally.

I'm about 18-20 minutes a mile if I'm just walking on normal pavement of sidewalks.

If I'm on trails or hiking its about 20-25 minutes, 30 minutes if a lot of climbing.

On typical sidewalk walking, I walk pretty fast. I find myself always passing people.

When I walk my dog, we cover 6 miles in about 90 minutes. That's with at least 2 poop stops and several marking stops. We do that every day, plus or minus a mile. So that's about 4 mph on average. On these walks, I sometimes pass other walkers, and sometimes other walkers pass me.
