So, Fairbanks is likely where I would be living if I do decide to take the plunge and move to Alaska. But I wonder, what would be the allure to living there? I mean, void of any mountain ranges, or coastline, what, if any, is the "beauty" of Fairbanks?
How is the "culture" different from other parts of Alaska? tell me anything to give me a "feel" for life in the Fairbanks area.

While we don't have the majestic mountain ranges, we do have hills big enough to call mountains by some.

The drive to my new house. Believe me, now that it is covered in snow and ice, it sure seems like a mountain to me!

A cabin I was checking out, trying to get, over looking the Tanana. Actually kind of over the place I currently have, which is down on the river.

Then there is my blog which you can check out for all the adventures available when you are based out of Fairbanks. Sorry, you'll have to go back a few pages.

What made you decide on Fairbanks over Anchorage?

I know many will get mad at me for saying this, but in terms of scenery Fairbanks would be my last choice for a residence in Alaska. Flat (far from the large mountain ranges) and too hot/dusty/smokey in the summer. Valdez, Anchorage, Mat-Su, and Kenai Penn all have far more spectacular scenery. There is much to be said for seeing spectacular Mountains and Scenery in your everyday life - it's good for the soul.

"Some" may say that. But I drive up to Murphy Dome quite often - and while it is quite pretty, those are rolling hills in my book - not mountains!

Fairbanks isn't winning any big prizes in the scenery department, but it's a good town, and there are lots of small things to notice. The frost on the trees up there is really beautiful, and I love the way the snow sparkles. They have more clear skies than areas closer to the coast and they get to see the aurora more (I've been here in cloud-central for a year and a half and haven't seen them yet). The hills north of town remind me of the southern Appalachians a little bit, but with slightly less banjo music. And you can see the Alaska Range in the distance up there. Here's either a sunset or a sunrise (they kind of blend together this time of year up there) from our friends' house:

And here's Creamers Field all full of Canada geese:

Check out Ray's posts in the photo thread, too. Most of his are from around the Fairbanks/North Pole area, and they're really beautiful.
