Well, went to my moose-hunting campsite yesterday to get a few things organized. Parked the truck and rode my ATV in/out and picked several pounds of blueberries on my way back to the truck. Didn't see any bears, and was glad about it since the brush nearby is quite high

Saw several people picking blueberries, but near the trailhead. I rode about 8 miles past them to my campsite.

By the time winter sets in and snow covers the ground, bears usually are hibernating. But sometimes the weather changes in the middle of the winter (turn warmer), or just for unknown reasons, I have heard that some bears wake up and move around looking for food.

I have seen bear tracks in Sterling, in February, in 2' of snow. You just never know about those guys.

True. You never know how wild animals behave each time. We have also had bear-den hunters being mauled by bears in the middle of the winter. A couple of years ago, this guy shot a bear that was around a den. The bear dropped, so he went to check it out; all of the sudden another grizzly jumped out of the den and mauled him. His hunting partner shot the bear through the head when the bear was on top of the hunter.

For example, when the investigators where trying the figure how the person I told you about got mauled by the black bear, this black sneaked within a few feet from them. At the moment they had no idea that it was the bear that killed the guy, but since the bear was threatening, they shot and killed it. The necropsy revealed that this was the bear that killed the guy because of the human remains found in its stomach, claws, and teeth.

The guy who died was quite a wonderful guy, who will me missed by his family a lot of people in Fairbanks and vicinity.

Just read this bear story at the News Miner, where a guy used a rifle to kill charging bear near Anchorage:

Black bears must be different in Alaska? In the Smoky Mountains they are very weary of people and the only attacks reported usually involve people antagonizing the bear or threatening their cubs.

Bears in general are weary of people, but brown or grizzly more so. Black bears are more plentiful, and more of them come in contact with humans in the US and Canada. There are more black bear/human encounters and injury caused by them than grizzly bears. However, grizzly bears account for more human deaths than black bears.
