Hi! I'm starting the task of buying clothes for the Fairbanks winter and everything I see is so expensive!

I'm browsing through patagonia.com and they have a nice sale going on right now.

I'm going to need some basics before I head the Fairbanks. I think I'll be able to find some cheaper clothes at second hand stores once I get there...?

Since I'm ordering online, does anyone have a favorite place to buy their clothes? Any advice on winter clothes, because learning what's all needed is tough!

Someone in another thread posted a 'how to dress for the winter' pamphlet... If I get a minute, I'll search for it. I think it was someone looking to go to college in Fairbanks thread... Some Alaskans seemed to think it was good.

In a nutshell, it was layers and it went over what type of material for what layer was best and what types of materials to avoid.

As far as buying before hand - it really depends on how much space you have available for the move. Extra suitcases on planes cost $. Plus you get to lug it all around.

If you can, I believe it would be best to wait until you get here. Big Rays has affordable winter gear and there are a few thrift type stores around to look for stuff. Sports Authority and Sportsman's Warehouse also have reasonably priced gear. Higher end stuff can be found at Wooly Rhino and The Prospector. I have also found good winter gear at garage sales throughout the area.

Wait until you get to Fairbanks. Big Ray's is a good source as is Value Village. I've found some awesome stuff at Value Village. Stick it in the laundry a couple of times and it smells just like brand new. Save big bucks.
