September hands down. You could potentially tag along on a hunting trip if you have friends who live there. The bugs are pretty much all gone which makes for much more enjoyable hiking trips.

Now for a word about Springtime in Alaska. Most of Alaska does not have a Springtime. During the time the rest of the U.S. is having Spring, Alaska is having breakup. While feeling the suns warmth after a long cold winter is nice it also means the ground is muddy, the winter's destruction of the highways has yet to be repaired, rivers are overflowing their banks and massive numbers of bugs are anxious to annoy the hell out of you.

Visit in September.

If you don't mind me asking, what brings you to Delta? I live here and love it, but it's not exactly a destination.

And I agree about September, especially if you can make it the first half of the month. It's the 24th now and the leaves have already been off most of the trees for a week or so, and I drove home in a snowstorm last night (it didn't stick..)

Just check with your son relating to the best time to visit.

I do agree with others that September is a good time to visit because of the beautiful landscape colors. But in relation to bugs being plentiful, all depends on the season.

Last September while moose hunting as we worked on a moose one of us had killed, we pretty much got eaten alive by gnats. One of my friends got a gnat in an eye that caused him a lot of pain and tears. i inhaled a couple of gnats into my nose, and luckily the hairs stopped them from traveling farther. I sneezed non-stop for quite a long time, and blew the suckers out of there. By the time we finished with the moose we had gnat bites all over the forearms, neck, and face. One of my friends developed some kind of reaction to the bites that made him scratch like a monkey non-stop. He tried Cortisone cream, vaseline, and soap and water, but nothing worked. Then he spread red color Tiger Balm on his forearms, and believe it or not the itch stopped 20 minutes later.

That said, in September the bugs are at a minimum when the air is nice and cool or just cold, which is very possible at that time of the year.

Wow, Ray... That doesn't sound like it was a fun hunting trip.

It was a great hunting trip, except from the moment one of my friends dropped the moose until we finished quartering and taking the meat to the campsite. But then, the work starts after you take the shot

It just got warm by the second week of September, and my friend killed the moose around 2:00 PM, if I well remember, with lots of sunlight. The first week was nice and cool, at least cool enough to sort of freeze (turn to a paste) the olive oil in a glass bottle at the campsite.

I don't think that cool weather came down to Anchorage in September. It wasn't hot, but I don't remember it being cold enough to turn olive oil into paste either. I was still routinely only wearing shorts and t-shirts.

Glad your friend got a Moose -
