My wife and I will be driving to Fort Wainwright from Colorado.
I was told to make sure that I have at least four spare tires for the trip
because parts of the highways are not paved and the stones will flatten our tires.
Is there any truth to this ?? Thanks for your input....

No! Just one full sized spare is good enough.

As Music_Man said, one full-size spare should be enough. Just make sure that all are fairly new.

We drove up from CO last summer- though Matsu, not Fairbanks- we had 1 spare for the truck, 2 spares for the trailer and it was fine- we didn't need any of them. You didn't say when you'd be driving though. The road is paved the entire way - though we ran into a ton of road construction (so unpaved) on the way up. Some stretches of road would be torn up for upwards of 40 km. Not sure how much road construction you can expect to encounter in BC or Yukon this time of the year.
I guess the best advice I can give is to take your time. And since nobody has mentioned it yet- get a Milepost if you haven't already...

One spare for sure. Two spares if you really want peace of mind. No need for four.
For me, the essential guide to the drive is a copy of the Milepost. The Bible of North Country Travel - The MILEPOST .

The Milepost is one of the greatest books ever, it's great reading even for the places you aren't going.

I always did the trip with one spare but then if you blow a tire, you start getting stressed out. So if you have more than one spare tire, it doesn't hurt to bring a couple. But, yes, never needed more than one spare tire myself and that seems to be the standard choice for most people. Be sure you check the air pressure because most people's spare tires become underinflated over the course of months/years, and a lot of times they put it on their car only to realize it's basically flat and can't be driven on.

Maybe most important is to be sure you bring enough water and food and weather-appropriate gear that you can spend a night in your vehicle if it breaks down, etc.

Again make it a full sized spare not one of those compact spares.
