Hello! We are moving to Delta Junction, leaving the lower 48 from Maryland on 15 September. I am looking for recommendations on cell service, internet, television. We currently have sprint and I know they do not have service up there. Not sure who is better, GCI, Verizon or AT&T.

Just in general, if you think of something that we might not think of, please throw that comment out there. I am transferring to Fort Greely so it is a PCS move for us. We are driving our truck and pulling one vehicle. We have already gotten engine block heaters installed. Still looking for a rental. We have the option of on base housing, but would rather not live on post.

Much of the post housing at Ft. Greely is new and much nicer than the average rental in Delta Junction. The town has a lot of contractors who are doing construction work on base, so sometimes the off-base rental market is really tight.

There is still some older housing, but I think it is mostly renovated.

GCI used to be the cable provider on base, not sure if it still is. AT&T and Verizon both have okay cell coverage, but it's rural Alaska so dead spots abound.

I live in Delta.

I use AT&T for cellphone service, and I'm generally happy with it. A few years ago it was definitely the best, but I'm not sure what improvements other providers may have made recently.

Internet was a problem here for a long time, but we have two independent services providing internet now, since none of the big ones would come here.. I use Vertical Broadband, and have been generally happy with it. It is pretty expensive though, and not as fast as what you're probably used to in Maryland. I can reliably stream 720p video, which is good enough for me. The internet situation might be totally different on base.

Otherwise, for television, there's no cable here as far as I know. There may be one or two channels broadcast in the old school way.. We all just use various streaming services.

For rentals, check out the Delta-Greely Yardsale facebook page, and maybe get in touch with Mt. Hayes Realtors and Debbie Joslin Realty. It should be a good time for that, with summer seasonal people moving out.

For other services, Delta has a pretty good little grocery store, post office, a couple banks, a couple gas stations and auto repair places, a couple hardware stores, a good outdoor shop (and about the only place to buy clothes in town), some restaurants (don't get your hopes up, haha), a small library, etc. There's a recreation center and a few other things on Greely. Most of us make the 100 mile drive to Fairbanks fairly frequently, for Costco, major purchases, entertainment, and the airport, which has at least a couple direct flights to Seattle every day.

Be aware that we have peak fall colors right now, it'll be almost brown season in a week, the first snow within the week or two after that, and then snow that doesn't melt sometime in October. Don't mean to be a downer, just good to be mentally prepared!
