Here I sit in Nashville Tn.
Question is........ How are the roads in late April?
My Grand daughter and husband are in route to Fairbanks, He'll be stationed at Ft Wainwright....
She is expecting and baby is due in May, 16th I do believe.

Anyway, we plan on being there for the birth of the baby and take care of the first born while she is in the hospital. Our plans were to fly as I thought maybe April was a bit early for a ROAD-TRIP but now with all the Coronavirus crap going on I'm considering taking the chance and driving up in late April/early May.
I'm figuring about 9 days travel time.
My question is and How bad are the roads in the spring????????

I know they'll be bad from snow/ice melt but in your best honest opinion is the trip doable?
please give me opinions, thoughts etc.........

Alk comments are welcome, but prefer to hear from the people in Alaska.....

Thanks in advance
Litefoot

It should be alright. There is still the chance of a late season snow storm but it's not likely. Temperatures, while cold by TN standards, they shouldn't be dangerously cold and might even be rather nice.

Be prepared for some weather, but you should be fine. Pick up a copy of www.TheMilepost.com and plan your fuel stops.

Second the milepost. Also, just want to make sure you are aware that if you have a criminal background, you may not be allowed in Canada.

Just make sure you got some good tires. All season. Not sure what your winter driving is like. But if it is anything like my GA driving, there will be a massive learning curve.

It took us 9 days from GA to AK, though we were limiting ourselves to 500ish miles per day. Did the trip with 3 kids (7, 4, and 2).

Be sure you have current IDs, etc. (I'm not even certain what's needed these days for Canada.)

You need a passport. Just a driver's license won't cut it.
