Had a few extra hours in Fairbanks yesterday so I drove up to Murphy Dome for the first time. Looks like it would be a pretty nice place to view/photograph the Aurora from in the winter. Anyone know what the winter access is like on Murphy Dome road? Judging from the activity up there yesterday, I would imagine it's still pretty popular in the winter?

Winter access is pretty good, due to the radar site and poeple access their home steads from the top of the dome. You might hit some snow drifts on occasion but normally pretty small. A typical suv or 4x4 with all season tires should be fine. You can always turn around if it is bad.

Yep, there is good winter road access there.

Going out to Chena Hot Springs is great too, you can sit in the hot springs and enjoy just watching them at twenty below zero.

Anyplace you can get away from the city lights though you will be able to get some good photos of the light shows at night.

Thanks!

I'll definitely plan a few overnight stopovers in Fairbanks this winter.

Take Sheep Creek Rd north out of town 2 or 3 miles and turn left on Murphy Dome Rd. Go all the way to the end. Never been up to Ester Dome but I think that road is just before Murphy Dome Rd.

Hannah and I tried to find it last October. It was dark and we never did find the place. We were north of town on murphy dome road I think. We climbed for quite some time (darn near fried my brakes coming back down) and ended up camping in some gravel pit.
So the next day we went to Chena Hot Springs and she got to see a spectacular show.

There should be no problems on Murphy Dome Road.....lots of people live out that way and work in town everyday.
