hey everyone, i was born and raised in Miami, and of German decent, would like to experience a German community in the us, and well these cities have big populations with large amounts of German and Europeans.

so which city should i choose, Fargo or Bismark?

and which has cheap apartment rentals near downtown?

and are there any areas i should avoid? compared to Miami fl it will prob be hard to find , but please enlighten me.

I've been to Miami couple times, so I can see you'll find no bad spots compared to down there. I moved to Fargo recently, but I've traveled the state a couple times for work. Not too much German in Fargo, mostly Norwegian, not sure what the native population in Bismarck is; but Bismarck and everthing to the west is all cowboy country. So if you can't get along with those wearing boots and a hat, I'd suggest Fargo. :-)

Good people in both spots but I'm sure you'll realize there's a culture shock.

I feel ya Miami... Im from Detroit and moving to Minot (just north of Bismarck). I know nothing about North Dakota except for the research from this last week. Im accepting a job offer that I cant pass up on. From what I gather, Fargo is more of a CITY (still nothing compared to Miami or even Detroit) but probably an easier transition. Bismark sounds pretty nice though, i was going to try and move between Bismark and Minot to try and capture both, however the people on here advized me against it due to the Work commute in winter, so Minot it is for me! Fargo is fairly close to Mineapolis Minnesota though, so that would be nice. Minneapolis has all same ammenitys that were acustomed to (good and bad). Best of luck with your decision.

Fargo and Bismarck are pretty similar. I live in Fargo and you would find affordable apartments downtown (but downtown Fargo isn't very impressive compared to Miami ) It is a college town where over 50% of the people rent rather that own, which makes for affordable housing all over.

I would have to say there are no dangerous neighborhoods in this city. We consider a bad block to be a place where people have weeds in their lawns...again quite different from your city. The metro-area consists of Fargo, West Fargo, Moorhead, and Dilworth and the area population is a bit under 200,000.

Also, Fargo is a bit more "cultured" than Bismarck...but that's not saying much.

Bismarck has a very high population of German descendants, but their culture has been changed by a century of more of living non the plains. Many of the settlers in south central and southwest ND were originally Germans from Russia, who had already acclimated themselves to plains living. Generally, they are fiercely independent and steadfast in their beliefs and not interested in more socialized systems like in Germany itself. There is also another group that were directly from Germany.

Fargo has a much lower proportion of people of German descent, and very few Germans from Russia. Minot is probably the most Scandinavian city in ND, with Fargo second and Grand Forks third.
