I've been looking at engineering work opportunities recently, and had looked at the Fargo area. The two companies that I found that seemed to have the most, were John Deere and a place called Esterline.

So I was just curious, what kind of a reputation do those two places have around Fargo? I'm interested in hearing both positive & negative --- things like work environments & salaries, job stability/layoffs, etc...

Thanks in advance...

Hi. I used to live in Fargo (for a very long time) and I'm not familiar with Esterline. John Deere has had ups and downs, with layoffs in the past. As you might guess, the ag industry is a bit cyclical, with lots of a good years and a few years that are not so good. A company with a good reputation is Ulteig Engineers in Fargo, but they too have had some layoffs (early 2010 if I recall correctly, but I might be off on that.) You may also want to check out Houston Engineering. Ulteig and Houston are fairly large (by Fargo standards) but there are quite a few smaller engineering fims as well. Generally the economy in Fargo is pretty impressive, as the region is more diverse in terms of industries than you might expect. Unemployment is low, as is the cost of living. I'm sorry I don't have more specifics to share, but I wish you the best.

I don't know what engineering position you are looking for, but other big manufacturers are also CAT www.cat.com and Bobcat Overview - Bobcat Company. I know CAT is expanding their Fargo plant
