I agree. The cost of living is definitely above average. However, the town's allure is a low unemployment rate and economic opportunity. It's a boomtown. The cost of housing has been rising. Anyone who bought a brand new "twin" home a few years ago back when the interest rates were at all time lows made a killing when their homes' values increased. A crazy 65-70% of the populace lives in apartments. On the North Dakota side of the river, there are very few decent used houses available for under $150,000 and even under $200,000. Add about $25,000 to the price for all those new houses ("special assessment" taxes). (You can get slightly cheaper housing in Moorhead, but the yearly income tax difference along with higher utility and auto insurance costs make it prohibitive.)

I look at the cost of housing on the West Coast and wonder how much higher house prices in Fargo can go. I suppose there's more room for an increase if the population keeps growing.
