being the age that the fargo area wants to keep (20s with a college degree), i am finally starting to understand why it is that fargo is unable to keep people like me: there is nothing here for us.

don't misconstrue, there is stuff here if you fit into any of the following groups:
1) elementary or high school-age
2) have children
3) elderly
4) your social gatherings center around liquor
5) college student

the only real thing that works to fargo's advantage is the cost of living, it's pretty low; however, that's misleading, because jobs here pay crap, just enough to afford an apartment, a car payment, and food - that's it.

there is nothing here to offer college graduates, unless they've got connections; jobs aren't given based on abilities. there is nothing to offer the college graduates for a social life, unless they're alcoholics (whether they admit it or not, liquor is _everywhere_).

It's the same up in Grand Forks. There is nothing for me to do and any job I look for is about $30,000 a year. But I took a job in Salt Lake City and can't wait to get the heck outta ND.

This may seem like a stupid question, but what do you want to do?

Actually acfreema has pretty much nailed it for Fargo. It's not " ... me me me ... " to look out after your own self interest as a young person wanting to advance in life. Fargo presents limited opportunities and advancement potential for many young people who finish their education here. It's the Fargo cliche, and the city and region suffer as a result. I've lived in Fargo for ten years and I know what I'm talking about.

I'm also now retired on a fixed income and because of that I find the Fargo low cost of living attractive for me. However I'm also good at making my own fun wherever I am. Sad to say, if you've had a wide experience of other locations outside North Dakota you will find Fargo to be a very clean and well run but insular place full of well meaning WHITE people who mostly like it that way.

$30k? I might make that working 60-70 hours/week between two places. The best wage I've been able to get has been a little over $9; when places see that I have an AAS and a BA, they get scared.

My favorite way to respond to that fear is "how does being overqualified/educated prevent me from doing a good job?"

Nothing personal, but I think you are insane. I live near SLC (nothing much to do here, either... except watch traffic on the freeways and watch the next big box store being built). Absolutely hate it. It's a zoo--few more years and it will be like the LA basin. Traffic is often a nightmare. Wall to wall hustle and bustle. The mountains are nice, but they are becomming like a city every weekend too. Point me to a sure prospect $25000 - $30000 a year job in Grand Forks, Fargo, Minot, or Bismarck and I'm on my way!

I've said the same about Fargo many times. There's a decent local music scene... and a lot of bars. But that's basically it.

i didn't answer it because it is a stupid question, it's very ambiguous

...to earn money?
...in my free time?
...do i ever want to retire?
...do i want to start a business?
...marry?
...have children?
...start a revolution?
...found a religious movement?

at this point in my life, it's not really a matter of what i want to do - it's a matter of what is available.

that's very observant of you, it is all about me; that's the way this country was founded: on the principles of individuality and personal responsibility.

EDIT: i just noticed that you are in England and may not have the same outlook as someone over here. your comments are entirely inappropriate, given the context.
