Ribbed, tank-style "A-shirts"/undershirts are fine...for layering or sleeping in if you're female, and for layering/doing manual labor in if you're a male, possibly for a pickup game of basketball. Not a fashion statement alone.
I'm very blase about the exposed bra strap, myself. I just don't see that it's a big deal. When you wear sleeveless or thin straps, it happens. When you wear a scoop- or boat-necked top, to happens. No biggie. The only way to avoid it is to wear a strapless (no thanks, uncomfortable and unsupportive), shelf bra shirts (again, not the most supportive), or clear-strapped bras, which look arguably as, if not more tacky. An exposed bra strap is not an exposed boob. It's just not that big of a deal. I personally typically match my bra to whatever color I'm wearing, in case the strap does peak out.
Where did the term wife beater come from??That alone is not classy...i am not into men wearing them. if they wear them as an undershirt fine, but that's it.
If I have to sit with YOUR armpit in MY face for 2 hours... It's now my business.
Is it possible for people to debate a light-hearted topic with rude snarks?
Based on this, you have a point. But not all guys sit to take up as much room as humanly possible. I usually keep my arms to my side. Wearing a sleeveless shirt is about comfort, while still retaining SOME modesty. Which would be lost by going about bare chested. If I get a shirt to fit my shoulders, it bags around the chest and at the waist. If I get it to fit my chest, it's very constrictive at the shoulders--unless it's sleeveless, of course. My job is pretty physical, and I work my shoulder muscles frequently.

I have a question about this thread. What is the distinction between a tank top, and a "wife beater" type shirt? I would have considered them the same thing.

OMG! I would have died! I would have asked to be moved! YUK! And I hate those wife-beater sleeveless shirts on a guy...or the sleeveless tanks that look awful on men..Any men!! What a turn-off!
I wear them as an undershirt and only by themselves when I am at home. Just like a lightweight crew or v-neck t-shirt, their purpose is to be worn underneath another shirt.
