I bought this pant made by Ralph Lauren (more than $200 retail value) for my brother. After he washed and ironed it for the first time, the [dye?] color is all over the place. He told me that it was a fake product but I know for sure that it is not as I bought it from a Polo Ralph Lauren store. I would like to know what caused the problem and whether I should bring it back to the store for a refund or at least an explaination? Thank you for your help.

Is that leather trim? Were there any care instructions on the label?

Yes it is leather trim. On the label it says machine wash cold separately, do not bleach, remove promptly, tumble dry low warm iron if needed

Actually I am not 100% sure if he ironed it

If you bought it from a Ralph Lauren store, it's not a fake. This is actually more common than one would think. Leather used in trims is very susceptible to bleeding and transfer. The place I use to get all my specialty items dry-cleaned won't even taken leather-trimmed items like those pants for this reason.

Just take it back to the store for an exchange and/or refund.

Ralph Lauren has a lifetime guarantee if bought in a full-price store and not an outlet.

Heat often causes crocking issues. Try to return for a refund but in the future, never iron trim!
