I think a lot depends. If it's silk, tied properly (and bottom touches the belt buckle), goes with the dress shirt with the proper collar size, they're fine.
Don't wear a clip on if you're over the age of 10.
I had a coworker a few years ago that wore a tie everyday. The problem was he wore them with short sleeve shirts with small collars obviously not meant for ties. To add, he wore them with the length so short it ended just below his chest. He looked like a cross between Dilbert and Al Bundy.

they were probably made so as to not see any part of the males body, thus, buttoning up a shirt completey, since Americans seem to have such a problem with seeing anything pertaining to the male body as offensive.......
can you even imagine???????????????? sheesh !!!!!!!!!! were so backward here.
