I remember when me an bunch of guys would see an old guy walk by with sandals, shorts and knee socks we'd yell out of the apartment window NICE SOCKS ! and then duck.
If a dude shaves his legs, then he shouldn't wear socks, since he can show more of his legs since they won't be offensive. But if he keeps the hair on his legs, then he should cover as much of it as possible, and socks help with that.

I like ankle socks (with tennis shoes) or no socks (with loafers/sandals). Tube socks do not sound good.
