so called preppy clothes are actually extremely classic therefore they never go out of style, so buy higher quality and save the cheap stores for the trendy stuff
Hey guys, I kind of wanna start finding new clothes for myself since I don't want to keep wearing T-shirts and jeans for the rest of my life. I love the preppy look, but I don't know where to get them for a bargain. I mean a polo shirt for 80 bucks is a lot in my book. I love Ralph Lauren, Calvin Kelin and stuff like that (Brand names). Help?
Used clothing stores, or T.J. Maxx (depends on the area, or so I've heard, but mine has a lot of polos and other preppy-like clothing for $20 or less).
How can preppy clothes be cheap? That's the biggest of oxymorons.
If you want a nice polo, that's in the 80-120 dollar range.
Otherwise, express sells them for 40 bucks. That's the lowest you can find.
But I get a lot of respect with the Lacoste or Vineyard Vines logo as opposed to the express' lion or the American Eagle.
And thanks to the importer's wife, I don't buy stuff in Abercrombie and AE anymore
Disagree with you there. Preppy is a style, so clothes can be had at any price; one just needs to know how to dress preppy. So for example a polo shirt is not necessarily preppy if you get say a black one ultra baggy. But if you can find a decent fitting polo shirt that is like nantucket/martha's vineyard red, then its preppy. Also, classic penny loafers (w/beef roll, w/out the pennies please) especially in that burgundy brown color; can be had cheap at bass outlet store. Same goes with madras shorts, lightish khaki pants, university stripe ties, boat shoes (no socks) can be found anywhere from JC Penny to Target.
Now, what Vineyard Vines, RL does get you is quality, and in some cases better fits than say Lands End.
All that being said, most of my preppy stuff comes from JCrew on Sale or at Factory store. Polo RL Factory for custom fit line.

I don't think people generally associate clothes in Target and JC Penney to preppy.
At least from my experience. It's always Lacoste, Fred Perry, VV or Ralph Lauren etc.
I like your populist point of view, but that's not how it works in the real world.
Even TSA skipped groping me when I was dressed up like I go for work, with a tie, cuff links and the whole nine yards.
People in the north east pay minute attention to everything and the respect follows from there.
So, in the "real world" business professional dress and preppy are the same thing? I think not.
If that's how it is in the north east, I'm glad I've never lived there.
I've worked alongside, and respected greatly, guys in $500 Jos A Bank suits. I've also worked with, and despised fully, guys in multi-thousand dollar Brioni. Even if you've got lots of cash, repsect is earned by your actions.
