I need new workout shoes every six months. Other than that, my shoes generally last me 2 years or longer. I spend a lot of money on shoes so I buy shoes that can be resoled. Before I wear my dress shoes I have sole protectors put on. I have them reheeled as soon as it's needed and I wipe them down/brush them before I put them back in their box. I also don't wear the same shoes every day.

I live in Dansko clogs during the winter, and they last for years and years, even with near daily wearing. In the summer, I wear a pair of leather things most days, which typically last a couple of years. Running shoes last a year or so for me.

Probably because 1) I buy good quality shoes and 2) I own a lot of shoes and I'm not wearing the same shoes day in, day out.
The same for me, though mine tend to last longer than two years. I've told this story before on here, but it bears repeating. As a grad student, about fifteen years ago I suddenly had to be "on" in front of people three times a week. I saved every penny I could and bought a pair of $200 ($170 with discount--to me then an exorbitant amount) pair of classic cordovan riding boots. One half-sole replacement and leather refurbishment treatment later and they are *still* going strong. If you were to calculate its use-value, that probably averages out to pennies per wearing, and that taught me the importance of investing in high-quality, classic leather goods. In contrast, at about the same time, I bought a cheap pair of black Franco Sarto boots on clearance, and these blew out in the left back seam in about two years.

Don't get me wrong--it's possible to buy fashionable shoes that won't be dated immediately; I'm all about having unusual shoes. As long as the quality is good and the styling is elegant and stylish, shoes, for women anyway, should last for longer than a couple of years. This is, of course, not counting athletic and other technical shoes and assuming that one has numerous shoes so no one pair gets worn into the ground. It's also assuming that those shoes will be well-cared for and maintained.

My daily wear boots are quite expensive and will most likely "outlive" me as they can be resoled at the factory. For work I have work crocs which are damn near indestructible. I believe in minimizing my carbon footprint by not purchasing "throwaway" products. Just think about the millions of clothing items that are thrown away in the landfills each year.

If you buy cheap shoes, they won't last long. If you buy good quality shoes, paying a fair price for the quality you are buying, then the shoes will last longer.

I don't think how long shoes last has a great deal to do with which gender they were made for.
