I have noticed that they only look OK on the very skinniest people and even then may not be the most flattering cut to wear. Why do I own several pair?

Because that's all they make anymore ?
I hate them too. Unless you're a stick insect they only make you appear bigger w/the whole muffin top thing. Not to mention they give every woman camel-toe.
Give me the cool nearly waist high levis with those wide belts that were popular in the early 90s. Think 90210 and Melrose place.
I love my skinny jeans and I'm not about to part with them anytime soon. I get tons of compliments from men & women when I wear them. I don't really pay attention to others in skinny jeans. I'm only worried about how I look.
I have always been the biggest skinny jean hater...but then I got a pair, and they are actually pretty cute with longer tunic tops that I'd ordinarily wear with leggings or tights.
With any top that's not midthigh-length, though, they're a no-go. So now, I don't mind them for myself, but only when worn in a certain way. With wide hips, they're a no-go unless paired with a longer top.
To wear them and not look utterly ridiculous, one needs the ultimate accessory: a fit body.
I think they suit slender women best. Age is not so much an issue as frame/body dimensions.
On men, there is a line between tailored/fitted and skinny. Tailored jeans/trousers are a timeless complement to the man (look at some 50 or 80 year old photos). Crossing the line to skinny makes a man look effete and feminine.
They only look stupid on guys and older women (38+ years old). I really think they look ridiculous on the older women
In that case you mean me and I happen to be wearing them today. lol
