I think it depends what part of the region you are from, some parts of the country, the best department store in the area is Mayc's and some people would consider it high end. I think Macy's spread themselves too thin and lost its "glamour" in some parts of the country. I would add Bloomingdales and Nieman Marcus up on the high end list as well.

Agreed, except that I have never been in a Lord & Taylor and am taking your word for it. Sears has nice tools and appliances, but their clothes are pretty low end. Lands End doesn't count in my mind because it is its own brand and Sears simply sells it. Their little kids' clothes are decent but it's difficult to screw up kids' clothes too badly.

1. Saks Fifth Avenue - High End

2. Nordstrom - High End

3. Macy's - Middle-High End

4. Lord & Taylor - Middle End

5. JC Penney - Middle End

6. Sears - Middle End

7. Walmart - Low End

Categorized from most expensive merchandise to least expensive merchandise. Also categorized according to quality and prestige.

If you're talking about buying clothing.

Nobody's going to buy tools from Saks Fifth Avenue - You'll go to Sears or Walmart. I'd buy tools from either Home Depot or Sears - not Walmart.

In my opinion it's less practical to buy household items (bathroom towels, sheets) at Saks Fifth Avenue - You'll go to JC Penney, Macy's or Sears.

You'd put Saks and Macy's in the same category!?!? And Nordstrom higher? Have you ever been in any of those stores or looked at their merchandise (designer lines) online?

Years ago, my mother-in-law gave us Christmas presents from Saks. She sent me a perfume set, which was very nice of her, but I do not wear perfume. It was Givenchy something-or-other. I returned it at the store and had about $100 in store credit. I couldn't find ANYTHING for that amount except a few things in cosmetics. Not clothing, not shoes, not casual jewelry, not even a simple T-shirt. I don't remember what I ended up with.

I'm surprised I didn't get the Pretty Woman, "You're obviously in the wrong place. Please leave" treatment. I was so out of place, LOL.

I don't like going into Saks for the same reason. I always feel out of place, so I just order what I want online. My husband thinks I'm crazy. He'll go in there wearing anything.
