I totally disagree that most perfumes smell nice. I haven't found a perfume I've liked in years - the scent changes on me, it's too flowery, etc. - I would never buy someone a perfume unless I KNEW it was something they wanted.
Agree with you that most perfumes do not smell nice. Many times my eyes watered when a woman came to close to me while wearing some perfume that my olfactory cannot stand. My husband would immediately sneeze like crazy when he catches a whiff of other perfume his olfactory cannot stand.
I really don't think it's that big of a deal. If you go with a good brand of perfume, it will be fine. Most women do not take perfume that seriously .. I've never heard of a woman refusing to wear a perfume because it's not her "signature scent" .. I think it's nice to have different choices- one for day, night, fancy occasions, etc. I have many- from Gucci, Juicy, DG, and Dior and I love them all !!! Christmas isn't about gifts anyway .. I'm sure the women will appreciate whatever you decide to give them. Good luck deciding !
Actually some women like myself don't like a lot of perfume even expensive Channel. My mom has gotten gifts of high end and it sits in the closet. Of course it is the thought that counts but it is also nice to give a gift someone will like. For a variety of factors like stated perfume or skin care is hard one to give.
If you want to do a beauty option. What about a manicure/pedicure gift certificate? Do they like massage or facial then a gf there? I like the gf where you get it at the mall but use it at any store there including department or the smaller ones.
I know a lot of people don't like to give gift certificates. I feel though you rarely here someone say ugh I got a gift certificate but do on other options.
I have great difficulties with scents. It's never a good thing for me to receive perfume. There's an 85% or greater that I won't be able to wear it and it's going to make me ill.

I've always known I'm not the only one who is meticulous about her perfume.
Each of my three sisters has a shelf full of perfumes that she never used. Not I. I simply donated any perfume that was not of my preference, so if anyone ever found a few unopened bottles of perfumes at thrift stores, they might have come from the gifts I received.
